An Interview With Dr. Daphne Mercer
What led you to the field of obstetrics/gynecology?
For as long as I can remember I have always been interested in medicine and women’s health. Medicine was a way to make a difference in people’s lives from all walks of life.
I will never forget my first delivery. That moment when new parents first lay their eyes on their newborn. I enjoyed not only the delivery but taking care of women during their prenatal period and forming that lifelong bond with my patients.
OB/GYNs have a unique position where we take care of women during their best and worst times. We form lifelong relationships with our patients from their teenage years until they are well past menopause. We are able to provide primary care in addition to advanced surgical care.
How many years have you been practicing in the field?
I have been practicing for the past 4 years in Brooklyn, NY, and decided to return to the Queens and Long Island area.
What makes your job rewarding? What do you enjoy about your work?
I enjoy providing quality care to all patients and being a patient advocate. I truly believe that everyone deserves excellent medical care and I hope to provide that quality of care to all my patients. I also hope that patients feel that I am approachable, knowledgeable, and compassionate. I treat all my patients the way I would a family member. I am always humbled by how thankful and grateful patients are.
What brought you to the area and to this practice?
I am a Queens native and Queens is known for its diversity, amazing restaurants and eclectic neighborhoods. I also attended high school in Nassau County, so I have always dreamed of working near the area that I grew up in.
All of the providers at The Woman’s Health Pavilion provide excellent care to their patients. I wanted to be part of a team that held themselves to high standards and provided top notch care to all their patients. Many of the providers are excellent surgeons and I knew I wanted a practice that not only specialized in obstetrics, but also gynecologic surgery.
Do you have special interests or areas of specialty as an ob/gyn?
I enjoy many aspects of being an OB/GYN. I love obstetrics but also love gynecologic surgery. Currently, I am especially interested in improving maternal mortality, access to contraception and prevention of cervical cancer.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy spending time with my husband and two daughters. I have a large Haitian family, so we always have family events, game nights, and dinners. In my spare time I try to stay up-to-date with current events, enjoy working out, and daydream about my next renovation by watching HGTV.
