An Interview with Laura Flanagan
What led you to the field of obstetrics/gynecology?
Women face unique healthcare needs and challenges throughout their lifetimes that require personalized care and attention. I love being able to partner with my patients as they grow and mature through adolescence, adulthood, pregnancy, and menopause. Working in obstetrics and gynecology allows me to empower women to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.
How many years have you been practicing in the field?
After working in finance for three years, I decided to make a career change to focus on women’s healthcare in 2017. I completed my Master of Science in Nursing degree in 2019 and joined The Woman’s Health Pavilion in 2020.
What makes your job rewarding? What do you enjoy about your work?
A visit to the gynecologist is not usually something that a patient looks forward to. I enjoy being able to put my patients at ease by providing extra sensitivity, gentleness, and compassion. It is my goal to alleviate anxiety and ensure that all of my patients feel completely comfortable asking questions and expressing concerns. In addition, fostering new life through compassionate and high-quality prenatal care is extremely rewarding. Pregnancy is a joyful but sometimes anxious time and I love to partner with my patients as they navigate preparing for a new baby.
What brought you to the area and to this practice?
I was drawn to The Woman’s Health Pavilion for many reasons, including a commitment to high-quality patient-centered care. The staff strives to be warm and welcoming which is very reassuring to patients. I am a true New Yorker at heart, and I love the fast pace and diversity that comes with living and working in Queens.
Do you have special interests or areas of specialty as an OB/GYN nurse?
My greatest interests within women’s health are preventive care and contraceptive management.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
My hobbies include theatre, ballet, spin class, knitting, and travel. I love going to Yankee games and spending time with friends and family.
