I was born and raised in Jamaica, West Indies, and migrated to the United States with my family at the age of eight. I completed my middle school, high school, and college education in New York City. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition from Long Island University, Post Campus in 2012, followed by my Bachelor of Nursing at LIU Brooklyn Campus in 2015.
I began my nursing career at Elmhurst Hospital’s Labor and Delivery unit, where I worked for five years. During this time, I obtained my dual Master degree in Nurse-Midwifery and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner from Frontier Nursing University, completing all my training at Maimonides Medical Center. In 2021, I joined Brookdale Hospital as a Certified Nurse Midwife, marking the beginning of my midwifery career. I also completed my Doctorate in Nursing Practice at Frontier Nursing University in 2022.
I am grateful for the valuable experience I have gained working alongside skilled providers in a diverse high-risk population.
An Interview with Diedre Willer
What led you to the field of obstetrics/gynecology?
My interest in obstetrics/gynecology was initially sparked at the age of six when I observed in a nursing textbook illustrations of a woman giving birth. This early exposure led to a lifelong passion, which was further cultivated through internships at various clinics during high school and volunteering at Brookdale Hospital’s Labor and Delivery unit in 2006. I became passionate about women’s health and empowering women to take control of their well-being ever since. I was drawn to the fast-paced environment, the importance of compassionate care, and the opportunity to be part of life-changing moments.
How many years have you been practicing in the field?
I have approximately 10 years of experience in this field. My first five years, I was a labor and delivery nurse at Elmhurst Hospital, followed by an additional five years as a Certified Nurse Midwife between Brookdale and Maimonides Hospital.
What makes your job rewarding? What do you enjoy about your work?
As a Certified Nurse-Midwife, I find my job incredibly rewarding because I have the opportunity to provide compassionate, patient-centered care to women throughout their reproductive lives and beyond. There is nothing quite like being part of such a vulnerable and transformative experience as childbirth, and empowering women to take control of their health. I enjoy the relationships I build with my patients, supporting them through significant life events, and helping them navigate the healthcare system. The autonomy and trust patients place in me is a privilege, and I strive to provide individualized care that meets their unique needs.
Plus, working in a dynamic field like OB/GYN means I am always learning and growing, which keeps my job exciting and challenging.
What brought you to the area and to this practice?
The emphasis on a “confident team player who is excellent with communicating and a warm demeanor” suggests that WHP prioritizes patient-centered care, respect, and dignity, aligning with my own professional interests and values. I am eager to join this team and contribute to an environment that fosters growth, collaboration, and exceptional patient care.
Do you have special interests or areas of specialty?
With my experience in Labor and delivery, I have found that providing continuous care during prenatal visits, labor, and postpartum-particularly home visits a week after delivery, have a profound impact on outcomes and patient satisfaction. I absolutely love prenatal care and the birthing process. It is such a pivotal experience for families. I believe in creating a supportive environment where patients feel empowered to make informed decisions about their care.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
As a mom to a 14-year-old daughter, my free time is usually spent chauffeuring her around to basketball practice, games, and her various other activities she is involved in. I also enjoy working-out in the mornings, exploring the city, trying new eats, reading a good book, and just soaking in the NYC vibes.
