Interview with Kara C. Ffrench

What led you to the field of obstetrics/gynecology?

From the time I was 13 or 14 years old, I’ve always been interested in childbirth. At that young age I begged my parents to buy me the “The Miracle of Life” video. I watched it and was hooked. I started out as a dancer, but when I decided to pursue another degree, I knew that it would lead to midwifery.

What makes your job rewarding?

It’s a wonderful privilege to be able to help women during the exciting time of pregnancy, birth and new motherhood. It doesn’t matter if this is her first baby or sixth… it’s always exciting. My goal is to help empower women to make informed choices regarding their bodies.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I’ve been dancing professionally as a member of the Vissi Dance Theater since 2000. I’ve toured internationally and in the tri-state area with the company. I have lots of varied interests… I’m equally at home camping in the mountains or seeing a concert at Lincoln Center. I also try to be silly at least once a day with my kids.
