Dr. Manjiri Nadkarni was born in India, immigrating to the U.S. with her mother at age 12. Since then, she has resided in Ozone Park. She completed her undergraduate training at NYU focusing on child and adolescent mental health studies and chemistry. Her work experience during college included after-school program assistance for children with special needs, as well as working closely as a multiple foreign languages translator for Nichols Kristof’s documentary “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide”. She followed her passion for service and completed her master’s degree at Rutgers Graduate School in Newark, where her thesis work focused on development of community-based intervention programs for women and children exposed to domestic violence. This led to the establishment of Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIP), an award-winning student-run organization providing services to women in shelters and at-risk youth. Dr. Nadkarni was offered early admission to Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in 2016 and graduated with an M.D. degree with Distinction in Service. She completed her obstetrics and gynecology residency training at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn and was awarded the Ryan Program Resident Award for Excellence in Family Planning at graduation.

An Interview with Dr. Manjiri S. Nadkarni
What led you to the field of obstetrics/gynecology?
I was inspired by mother in many ways, a woman ahead of her times who exemplified kindness and a pioneering spirit. I always knew I wanted to do something in the field of advocacy and service. I found my calling in the field of obstetrics and gynecology because it was a perfect marriage of all aspects that drew me in to medicine: A combination of working hands-on in surgery, thinking analytically in critical care, managing emergencies, and advocating for women throughout. Ob/Gyn also permits me to build relationships with my patients, and to be there for them in their most vulnerable moments.
How many years have you been practicing in the field?
I trained and was practicing in Brooklyn for 4 years before moving back home to Queens and joining WHP in 2024.
What makes your job rewarding? What do you enjoy about your work?
I’m inspired by caring for women in all stages of life from childhood, early adolescence, reproductive years, through menopause. All these transitions in a woman’s life involve very personal decisions and new challenges. In addition to providing medical care, my job allows me to educate, reassure, advocate, and empower women to make choices best suited for them while enabling feeling seen, heard, and safe.
What brought you to the area and to this practice?
I grew up in Queens, very close to the Howard Beach office. I always wanted to come back home and practice in the community where I was raised. I love this practice because we truly provide comprehensive care to women from all walks of life. I chose this practice specifically because I see the commitment of all staff to self-betterment and an environment of mentorship and safety, allowing the providers to keep up with the most recent advancements in the field so that we can continue to provide the best possible care for our patients.
Do you have special interests or areas of specialty as an ob/gyn?
I am interested in minimally invasive surgery including robotic surgery, women’s sexual health education and advocacy, and prevention of and intervention for gender-based violence.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy exploring art history, theater, parks, reading and travelling. I like exploring new cuisines and occasionally dabble in cooking elaborate dinners.
Language proficiency
Fluent in Hindi, Urdu, Marathi.
