Born and raised in Moscow and educated in New York City, Dr. Kon is a third generation physician. She earned her combined MD-PhD degree at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. She completed her residency at Mount Sinai West/St. Luke’s Hospitals in Manhattan. She then explored many different ways in which she could apply her training: She has practiced as a traveling physicin in rural areas on the West Coast, a hospitalist, a generalist, and a faculty member at several NYC hospitals.

An Interview with Dr. Maria Kon
What led you to the field of obstetrics/gynecology?
It was love from the first moment of my medical school rotation. I loved the diversity of the field, from obstetrics, to primary care, surgery, endocrinology, and even oncology. I have always been passionate about social justice and human rights, and this is the specialty that makes you an unapologetic advocate in these fields.
How many years have you been practicing in the field?
7 years out of residency plus 4 years of residency = 11

What brought you to the area and to this practice?
After having my second son, Brooklyn started to suffocate my family and I. Fortunately, my husband was offered an excellent position at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and we were delighted to uproot our lives to this beautiful part of Long Island. After working exclusively at a hospital setting for several years, I was yearning to get back to seeing patients in the office of a private practice, as it provides more intimate and impactful interactions. The Woman’s Health Pavilion is a brilliantly run practice, whose values align with mine.
Do you have special interests or areas of specialty as an ob/gyn?
Menopause/perimenopause, abnormal uterine bleeding, contraception, breastfeeding
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love to travel, take dance classes, bake sourdough bread, and go on adventures with my two sons
