An Interview with Nancy Macchiarella
What led you to the field of obstetrics/gynecology?
My interest in medicine began when I was growing up on a family beef farm in rural Michigan. I learned to appreciate the importance of health and nutrition, and actually considered a career in veterinary medicine. The intricacies of the human body drove me to medical school instead, where exposure to an amazing Ob/Gyn truly changed my life. For this I will be forever grateful. It’s a cherished gift to be able to care for women in this manner.
How many years have you been practicing in the field?
I dedicated my last 20 years of practice to the people who helped guide me as a young girl, in the same rural area of Michigan where I was raised. I felt honored that the community trusted me as their physician during some of life’s most delicate moments.
What makes your job rewarding? What do you enjoy about your work?
I view my patients as an extension of my family, and I’m grateful that my patients rely on my expertise in all stages of their lives. As an Ob/Gyn, I can empower women as we tackle issues together.
What brought you to the area and to this practice?
Although I loved my private practice in Michigan, I wanted to commit myself to the care of pregnant women as a laborist. After 20 years in a rural community, I also was looking for a change: My husband (who grew up in Long Island) and I are both avid travelers who seek cultural adventures, and we love what New York has to offer.
Do you have special interests or areas of specialty as an ob/gyn?
Although I am a ob/gyn generalist, I have taken great care in mastering the art of vaginal surgery. Having performed thousands of vaginal hysterectomies, I would definitely consider this to be an area of expertise. I do however enjoy every aspect of the specialty!
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Free time for me typically includes spending time with my three children. I also have a special interest in bodybuilding: I compete nationally in the National Physique Committee, in the Figure division. When I am not in the gym with my husband, however, I do love walking my corgi, Lizzy, tending to flowers and vegetables in the garden, playing the piano, and traveling.
