Dr. Barcia is originally from Rockland County, NY where she grew up surrounded by two of her favorite things: family and nature. She then went on to graduate from Bucknell University where she was recognized for attaining the highest GPA in her college class. Following college, she attended NYU School of Medicine, where she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society and awarded the Frederick C. Holden Award for excellence in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Barcia then completed her residency training in New York City at NYU Langone Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital, during which time she was recognized as an exemplar resident educator.

An Interview with Dr. Skyler Barcia
What led you to the field of obstetrics/gynecology?
I was first introduced to the field of obstetrics and gynecology at a young age when my parents struggled with infertility. Attending doctor’s appointments with my mom sparked my interest in becoming an OB/GYN. This interest only grew as I completed summer internships in college. By the time I got to medical school, I knew I wanted to have a career in which I could help women feel empowered with respect to their health.
How many years have you been practicing in the field?
After graduating from medical school, I lived in NYC where I practiced obstetrics and gynecology for 4 years during my residency.
What do you enjoy about your work?
Before deciding to become a doctor, I considered becoming a teacher. Accordingly, teaching is one of my favorite parts of being a physician. It is so rewarding to help my patients understand their bodies so they can live the lives they desire. I was also drawn to the field of obstetrics given its overall joyful nature. Despite hundreds of deliveries in my past, each birth fills me with the same sense of awe and joy as my very first delivery.
What brought you to the area and to this practice?
I grew up in the suburbs of NYC and always wanted to return. After living in NYC for almost a decade, my husband and I decided to move to Long Island to be closer to family. When I was offered the opportunity to join The Woman’s Health Pavilion, I knew I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work alongside some amazing obstetricians and skilled surgeons! I was also very impressed by the welcoming environment and team mentality at The Woman’s Health Pavilion.
Do you have special interests or areas of specialty as an ob/gyn?
Fertility and fibroids are two of my interests. Navigating both can be challenging, but educating my patients and helping them to find the right solutions for them is incredibly rewarding.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love being active and spending a lot of time in nature. Running, hiking and tennis are some of my favorite activities. I also enjoy being creative with baking and crafts. Most importantly, I cherish spending time with my family.
