Safe Medications in Pregnancy

Allergies

  • Loratadine (Claritin), Cetirizine (Zyrtec), Fexofenadine (Allegra) without “D”
  • Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
  • Saline nasal rinses or Neti Pot
  • Fluticasone nasal spray (Flonase)

Antibiotics

  • Many antibiotics are safe to take in pregnancy. The most common that we recommend are Amoxicillin and Cephalexin. You may be prescribed other antibiotics depending on what we are treating, in most instances the benefits of these antibiotics outweigh the risks. If you have questions, we recommend you speak with your provider.

Antivirals

  • Tamiflu–Rx only, speak with your provider
  • Paxlovid–Rx only, speak with your provider
  • Valtrex—Rx only, speak with your provider

Cold/Flu/COVID

  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
  • Guaifenesin (Mucinex)
  • Dextromethorphan (Robitussin)
  • Cepacol/Menthol throat lozenges
  • Vicks VapoRub

Constipation

  • Increase fluid and fiber intake!!
  • Benefiber
  • Senna
  • Psyllium (Metamucil)
  • Docusate (Colace)
  • Magnesium Citrate
  • Polyethylene Glycol (Miralax)

Diarrhea

  • Bland diet and increased hydration are best
  • If persistent, Imodium can be used sparingly.

Gas

  • Simethicone (Gas-X)

GERD/Reflux

  • Tums
  • Rolaids
  • Mylanta
  • Famotidine (Pepcid)
  • Cemetidine (Tagamet)
  • Esomeprazole (Nexium)

Nausea/Vomiting

  • Dramamine (Meclizine)
  • Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
  • Unisom Sleep Tabs +/- Vitamin B6 (over the counter substitution for Diclegis)
  • Diclegis or Bonjesta—Rx only, speak with your provider
  • Metoclopramide (Reglan)–Rx only, speak with your provider
  • Ondansetron (Zofran)–Rx only, speak with your provider

Vaginitis

  • Monistat 7 (miconozole)
  • Vagisil
  • Clindamycin—Rx only, speak with your provider
  • Metronidazole—Rx only, speak with your provider
  • Terazol—Rx only, speak with your provider
